Iron Cross

ironcross.jpg

Iron Cross built by German prisoners during WWII. About 4800 prisoners of war were housed in a camp from 1943 to 19346. The men worked farms as field hands in Chaves County, Artesia and Mayhill. A 50-man detail worked on a flood-control project in Roswell by placing rocks on the riverbanks. They put an Iron Cross near Pennsylvanian and Kentucky Aveneues. Some Roswell citizens were irate by this cross and poured five yards of concrete over the POWs work. The concrete washed away with time, and the Iron Cross is visible again.
